We’re just home from the annual Thunder in the Glens 2010 Harley Davidson Owners Group rally in Aviemore where our project Harley Davidson XR1200 won “Best Sportser” in the custom bike show:

And we made it a “double header” because our former Softail project bike won “Best Big Twin”. Not bad for a 5 year old custom job!:

Worth getting soaked for we reckon!

Here’s my favourite image of Dougie’s 1200 Bandit showing the polished rear wheel rim with new paint, swingarm, pillion hangers with footpegs, rider controls, footpegs and heel plates. Looking good!

Having already polished and painted the wheels and swingarm off Dougie’s Suzuki Bandit 1200, he’s asked us to brighten up the rider foot pegs, heel plates and controls, along with the pillion footrest hangers and footpegs. These were in generally good condition when they arrived:

These were stripped and thoroughly de-greased before grit blasting to remove lacquer, 4 abrasive stages, 1 buffing and two finishing stages. In total 14 pieces were mirror polished!:

Steve from Aberdeen recently sent us the lower fork legs and fork brace off his recently acquired Harley Davidson FX Dyna. The chrome on the fork brace had become badly pitted and corroded, and the fork leg lowers were showing signs of neglect:

The fork legs were thoroughly cleaned and de-greased, and the fork brace was grit blasted to remove peeling chrome plating. The customer wanted a grey “retro” look to the parts, so we carried out 3 stages of abrasive polishing to remove rough casting and road damage, and 2 stages of buffing to give an overall smooth grey polished finish. We’re very pleased with the outcome, and the job was turned around within 36 hours!:

Dougie from Kilmarnock brought us the wheels and swingarm from his 1996 Suzuki 1200 Bandit for some much needed TLC. A previous owner had allowed the wheel rims to become badly pitted, scratched and tarnished; and the paint had become badly chipped in places. The swingarm had suffered 2 deep gouges along with 14 years of general road damage. We gave the swingarm 5 stages of abrasive polishing, two buffing and three finishing stages. The wheels had three layers of paint stripped off the centres and then the rims were treated to five abrasive, one buffing and four finishing stages to bring the rims up as close to new as we could achieve. With the rims polished, the wheels were taken to G’s Custom Designs in Blairgowrie, who gave the centres a grit-blast etch prime, then paint prime, paint and lacquer finish to bring the paint back as good as new. Tyres were removed before painting, and replaced and re-balanced with new valves afterwards. We’re delighted with the outcome – and so is Dougie!:
